are friendships, and there are destinies woven together by time, trust, shared
values, and a common commitment to service. The remarkable relationship between
Hon. Damilola Sonayon James and Hon. (Barr.) Barakat Odunuga Bakare stands as a
shining example of such a bond.

For
twenty-six years, these two distinguished personalities have journeyed together
as friends, confidants, supporters, and partners in the pursuit of excellence.
Through different phases of life, they have remained steadfast in their
commitment to one another, demonstrating the true essence of friendship built
on integrity, loyalty, trust, and mutual respect.

Today,
history beckons as both friends prepare to assume strategic leadership
positions in the governance architecture of Lagos State. While Hon. Damilola
Sonayon James is set to serve in the Executive Arm as the Incoming Deputy
Governor of Lagos State, Hon. (Barr.) Barakat Odunuga Bakare is equally poised
to serve in the Legislative Arm as the Incoming Member representing Surulere

testament to years of hard work, resilience, dedication to public service, and
unwavering commitment to the progressive ideals that have continued to define
Lagos State.

Their
emergence also symbolizes the triumph of a new generation of leaders who have

shape the future of governance in Nigeria. His unwavering commitment to
inclusiveness, youth participation, and gender equality has created
opportunities for capable young leaders and women to take their rightful place
in leadership and decision-making processes.

President

continued to inspire a generation of Nigerians to believe that merit, hard
work, and dedication can open doors to meaningful service.

The
rise of these two leaders also sends a powerful message to young people across
Lagos State and Nigeria that the future belongs to those who prepare for it. It
reaffirms that women can excel at the highest levels of governance and that
youth participation is no longer an aspiration but a reality.

Different Contexts: Common Aspirations — Hon. Barakat Odunuga-Bakare (Esq.) Joins Surulere Youth to Commemorate International Youth Day

Yesterday, Hon.
Barakat Odunuga-Bakare (Esq.) joined the vibrant youths and young stakeholders
of Surulere Local Government at a Youth Stakeholders Engagement Meeting
organized by the Supervisor for Youth, Surulere Local Government, as part of
activities commemorating International Youth Day.

The gathering
provided an important platform for young people across Surulere to come
together, exchange ideas, reflect on the challenges confronting their
generation, and explore practical pathways towards building a more inclusive,
prosperous and sustainable future.

As part of the
celebration, Hon. Barakat delivered a keynote address on the theme:

“Different
Contexts: Common Aspirations”

In her keynote
address, Hon. Barakat emphasized that although young people may come from
different backgrounds, professions, communities, economic circumstances and
social experiences, they are united by a number of common aspirations — the
desire for meaningful opportunities, quality education, decent employment,
security, inclusion, dignity, good governance and a future where their
potential can be fully realized.

She noted that our
differences should not become barriers to collective progress. Rather, they
should be viewed as strengths that can foster creativity, innovation,
collaboration and broader perspectives in addressing the challenges confronting
society.

Hon. Barakat
challenged the youths of Surulere to move beyond conversations and become
active participants in shaping the future they desire. He stressed the
importance of leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation, skills development,
community engagement and responsible citizenship, encouraging young people to
recognize that leadership is not limited to occupying political office but also
involves the ability to identify problems, mobilize people and create
solutions.

She further
underscored the need for stronger collaboration between young people,
government, community leaders, private-sector stakeholders and civil society
organizations. According to him, sustainable youth development requires an
ecosystem where young people are not merely consulted but are actively involved
in decision-making and policy formulation.

The engagement
also highlighted the importance of creating opportunities that enable young
people to transform their talents and ideas into sustainable livelihoods. Hon.
Barakat called for increased investment in vocational and digital skills,
entrepreneurship, sports, creative industries, technology and other emerging
sectors capable of positioning young Nigerians competitively in the global
economy.

She encouraged the
youths of Surulere to remain united, regardless of political, professional, religious,
social or economic differences, emphasizing that the future belongs to a
generation that is willing to work together despite its differences.

The keynote
address therefore served as both a reflection and a call to action: a
reflection on the realities confronting young people today and a call for them
to take ownership of their collective future.

Hon. Barakat also
commended the Supervisor for Youth, Surulere Local Government, for organizing
the Youth Stakeholders Engagement Meeting and creating a platform where young
people could freely engage, share perspectives and contribute to conversations
about their future.

She reaffirmed his
commitment to supporting initiatives that promote youth empowerment, inclusion,
capacity building, employment opportunities and community development,
stressing that investing in young people is not simply an investment in the
present but a strategic investment in the future of Surulere, Lagos State and
Nigeria.

The celebration
concluded with a renewed sense of purpose among participants, reinforcing the
message that while young people may operate within different contexts, their
common aspirations can serve as the foundation for unity, collaboration and
transformative progress.

Different
backgrounds. Different experiences. Different pathways.

But one
generation, one shared responsibility and common aspirations.

Happy
International Youth Day to the exceptional youths of Surulere and young people
across Nigeria.✌🏽

On Monday, 31st
August 2026, members of the Games Village and Accommodation Subcommittee, under
the leadership of Hon. Barakat Odunuga-Bakare (Esq.), held their sixth
strategic meeting as part of the ongoing preparations for the forthcoming Eko
Intermediate Games 2026, scheduled to take place from 1st to 15th October 2026
across designated sporting facilities in Lagos State.

The meeting formed
part of the committee’s continued efforts to ensure that all necessary
arrangements for the successful hosting of athletes, officials, volunteers and
other participants are effectively coordinated and delivered in line with the
standards expected of the Games.

At the meeting,
members undertook further and detailed deliberations on the key outstanding
areas of the committee’s mandate, with particular attention given to the
finalisation of the budget, procurement processes and implementation of
previously adopted recommendations.

The committee
reviewed the various requirements relating to the Games Village and
accommodation arrangements, assessing the resources needed to provide a
conducive, secure and properly coordinated environment for athletes and other
accredited participants throughout the duration of the Games.

A significant
aspect of the meeting was the consideration and refinement of the budgetary
framework, with members examining projected expenditures against the
operational requirements of the Games. The discussions were aimed at ensuring
that available resources are deployed responsibly while maintaining efficiency,
accountability and value for money.

The committee also
deliberated extensively on procurement requirements and processes, identifying
priority items and services that would need to be secured ahead of the
commencement of the Games. Members emphasised the importance of timely
procurement and delivery to prevent avoidable delays and ensure that all
facilities and accommodation arrangements are adequately prepared before the
arrival of participants.

Furthermore, the
committee revisited recommendations arising from its previous meetings and
assessments, with a view to moving from planning to full implementation.
Particular emphasis was placed on establishing clear timelines, assigning
responsibilities and ensuring effective coordination among the relevant
stakeholders involved in the Games Village and accommodation arrangements.

The meeting also
provided an opportunity for members to evaluate the progress already recorded,
identify outstanding tasks and strengthen the implementation strategy as the
Games draw closer.

Under the
leadership of Hon. Barakat Odunuga-Bakare (Esq.), the committee reaffirmed its
commitment to delivering a well-organised, comfortable and functional Games
Village and accommodation system that will contribute significantly to the
overall success of the Eko Intermediate Games 2026.

The sixth
strategic meeting therefore marked another important milestone in the
committee’s preparation, as members continue to work diligently towards
ensuring that all accommodation, logistics, procurement and Games Village
requirements are concluded within the stipulated timelines.

With the
commencement of the Eko Intermediate Games now fast approaching, the committee
remains focused on translating its plans and recommendations into concrete
actions and ensuring a seamless experience for all participating athletes and
officials throughout the duration of the Games.

Strengthening Communities

A major highlight
of the NSEP Lagos edition was the distribution of empowerment materials and
essential items to selected beneficiaries from Surulere and Ikeja Local
Governments.

Among the items
distributed were Solar Power Packs, Charcoal Cooking Stoves and various food
items, providing beneficiaries with practical resources capable of supporting
their livelihoods while addressing some immediate household needs.
